Joshua Mcilwain, 2024, Young Professional USA

I am presently employed in a Business Development role with a Commissioning/Retro-Cx/Systems Integration firm, I have had the good fortune to serve as the chair of the IFMA Denver Chapter of the Sustainability Committee. My day-to-day role sees project work related to improving energy efficiency and ensuring compliance with state and municipal building performance standards, in addition to education and advocacy for IFMA members. Some of my additional volunteer work includes fundraising for causes ranging from cancer research, food scarcity, workforce, and career development, and more. Previously, I served as a board member for the Youth Sustainability Board, networking and coordinating school-based “Green Clubs” with service minded initiatives. In addition, I have developed ideas and programs over the course of 20 years in facilities services to help impact the world with positive change.

I have my sights set beyond the horizon: impacting schools, hospitals, universities, commercial and government buildings. Some of the more critical issues related to Sustainability are the increased frequency, severity, and costs of natural disasters; freshwater resources and drought; and the associated impacts to human health. In my opinion, the most critical is the resistance, denial, and stubbornness guided by competing and special interests. I see this as the roadblock to potential success of individual and collective efforts taken to ameliorate or remedy the impacts of Climate Change that we face. I have seen representatives misrepresent what is in the best interests of their constituents. One could assume I am speaking about Congress, and yet the individuals I refer to are/were the leaders of chapters of construction and building trades associations. The groups they are tasked with leading are comprised of different interests – -owners and managers of companies and trades contractors, but all are affected by GHG regulations. Where there is resistance to new ideas, it follows that there will be a misuse of influence. 

I see competing paradigms on a collision course. One side believes this new thinking is not only unnecessary, but also dangerous, and that this new thinking – – Triple Bottom Line – – will doom us to failure. The other side believes that old thinking must die, or else it will kill us. Therefore, the new thinking needs to be able to listen to both sides of an argument and accommodate concerns with compassion. We must grapple with rising insurance costs, rebuilding after disasters, and growing scarcity of adequate freshwater to irrigate crops for Agriculture and human consumption. We are adjusting to the post pandemic reality of return to office policies impacting commercial real estate markets, sick buildings, urban decay, and doom loops. But we must start learning to listen to each other if we are going to get anything done that is truly “Sustainable.”

As a seasoned, forward-thinking professional, I have a proven track record of success as a Facilities and Workplace Manager in both client-side and service provider roles within the Real Estate and Facility Management industry. With over eight years of experience on an international level, I have honed my skills in managing, analysing, and optimising the operational efficiency of various corporate real estate assets. My areas of expertise include Property Management, Planning Implementation, Project Management, Feasibility Studies, Sustainable Facility Management, International Tendering and Contract Management. I have led teams of experts from diverse backgrounds and collaborated with a range of teams on various projects. My strategic planning and execution skills, coupled with my ability to assess market trends, make me a dynamic leader. My commitment to excellence and passion for innovation drives me to utilise my abilities to enhance operational efficiency and drive technological advancement within your organisation.

I am pursuing SFP certification to develop skills in facility program development, sustainability initiatives, change management, workplace strategy, and evaluation of sustainable achievements. I aim to apply these skills in the refugee camp where I work by addressing waste management and hygiene issues through strategies focused on the 3Rs (reduce, recycle, reuse) and establishing hygiene stations. These initiatives aim to achieve a 30% reduction in waste, and I plan to review progress quarterly over eight months to gain executive support. In addition, I will create a sustainable workplace management plan to promote energy efficiency and employee wellness, with the goal of reducing energy consumption by 5-10% and improving employee satisfaction by 20% within six months. This will involve improving air quality, proposing comfortable furniture, utilising daylight harvesting, and upgrading lighting systems with ongoing monitoring and adjustments.

I currently study and work part-time with a company in charge of the refugee and Ukrainian Arrival centre in Berlin, where I provide soft FM services and assist with logistics management. I have identified several areas for improvement that could enhance the overall efficiency of the facility and the organisational processes. Unfortunately, due to my status, I cannot make significant changes or implement new initiatives, as I lack the authority and decision-making power to effect such changes. However, earning the SFP certification, coupled with my experiences and master’s degree, would elevate my position with the organisation closer to the decision-making executives. This would enable me to play a more active role in the decision-making process, allowing me to implement various initiatives that would be valued and appreciated. More so, the knowledge gained while earning the certification can be implemented in the camp, thus contributing to its sustainable operation and maintenance.

I am a highly motivated graduate student in Facilities Management with a strong passion for the built environment and sustainability. My background incorporates knowledge in construction management, architecture, property management, and sustainable practices. Throughout my career, I have demonstrated a dedication to spearheading innovative project initiatives, ensuring smooth project execution, and upholding exceptional client satisfaction. I am enthusiastic about applying my skills and expertise to an internship opportunity where I can contribute to groundbreaking and sustainable projects.

One of my recent notable projects was the “Sustainable Cities Fit for the Future” initiative for Kufstein, Austria. This project aimed to create “car-free” zones and implement sustainable practices in underutilized city spaces by Enhancing Bicycle Traffic, developing new bike routes to reduce vehicle usage, and adding Solar-Powered Water Taps to significantly generate energy while providing spring water from the Alps throughout the city. Our presentation to city officials, including the Mayor of Kufstein, earned my team the best video award in the competition for its clarity, concept, and creativity. In my roles with previous organizations, I have championed sustainability through various initiatives, such as Micro Waste Programs, encouraging minimal waste strategies, and recycling and reusing furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E). I have also integrated Technology, implementing smart thermostats, water sensors, and monitors. I have also used eco-friendly landscaping techniques and safe, biodegradable materials in landscaping activities and renovations.

Preserving our environment to maintain healthy lifestyles is essential to a progressive future. My focus on decarbonization initiatives is complemented by my efforts to enhance the facility’s occupants’ health, safety, and overall well-being. Improving indoor air quality is not just a health concern but a key factor in boosting productivity and ensuring smooth daily operations. This should motivate us to work towards a healthier and more productive environment. Education is not only important but imperative to making sustainable changes and improvements. It is not just for us as facilities managers but also for the occupants in the areas and environments where these changes are mandated. By understanding the reasons behind these changes, we can all be empowered to contribute to the upkeep of the facility’s lifecycle and overall longevity.

Earning the Sustainability Facility Professional certification will provide me with a comprehensive skill set that I can apply through specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) plans. One of my key focuses is on decarbonization initiatives, particularly in older facilities. These initiatives are essential and urgent, as they play a crucial role in reducing our carbon footprint and ensuring a sustainable future. Improving indoor air quality is at the top of my list. It is crucial to successful day-to-day operations, productivity, and overall longevity.

Elizabeth Baulder, 2024

My passion for sustainability began during my thesis project while attending university. I designed the renovation of a historic structure with the goal of driving positive environmental and social impact in the community. Since then, I have solidified my expertise by obtaining certifications such as LEED Green Associate and Circular Economy specialist through the Circular Economy Institute. During my time at Gensler, I consulted as a sustainability strategist and co-led the office’s sustainability efforts. This allowed me to gain valuable experience in aligning sustainability initiatives with business objectives to create long-term value for clients. In May 2023, I founded Le Cercle Brands, a consultancy dedicated to working with decision makers to understand the importance of integrating sustainability goals into their core business and facility strategies. Through my work, I aim to demonstrate how sustainable practices can not only benefit the environment but also drive profitability and competitive advantage.

The SFP certification will allow me to continue to learn and provide insights into facilities management professionals’ challenges, language, and decision-making drivers. With this knowledge, I will craft compelling business cases, quantifying sustainable initiatives’ financial and operational benefits. I will incorporate technical terminology and metrics into clear sustainability reports resonating with FM teams. Additionally, I will confidently discuss waste reduction and resource optimization using the shared language from the certification. The practical knowledge gained will bridge the gap between abstract concepts and actionable implementations within FM operations. Within 6 months, I will develop and deliver targeted training modules equipping FM professionals with tools to integrate sustainable practices seamlessly. The goal is to be able to work with them as a strategic partner, they know their daily work best, so I will focus on using the knowledge gained from the certification to give them actionable items.

Obtaining the SFP certification would allow me to impact organizations by lending credibility and expertise to my recommendations. I could help realize cost savings through waste reduction strategies such as material reuse and composting. Not only will I be able to help an organization save hard costs, but I will also be able to work with them to gain a competitive advantage with other competitors, gain brand loyalty, and increase employee engagement. All this will lead to an organization successfully meeting their environmental, sustainable, and governance goals.

Lekhana Vali, 2024, Student, USA

From the outset of my academic journey in architecture, I chose courses focused on sustainability namely, climatology, environment-responsive architecture, materials, and methods in building construction, etc., I gained in-depth knowledge about sustainable building design and eco-friendly materials and was able to perceive the impact of the built environment on natural systems. These lessons were further enhanced by hands-on experimentation on materials and site visits to sustainable architecture. Later, graduate studies in Facilities Management broadened my perspective on building systems, enabling me to understand the strategic and practical implementation of sustainable solutions. As a young professional, I continue advancing my expertise in sustainability through credentials like LEED, WELL AP, and now, SFP. These certifications are equipping me with skills to analyse and implement sustainable changes. My goal is to add lasting value to the built environment and workplace by driving sustainable innovations and practices.

Sustainability is important to me because it is vital for creating environments that support human well-being and ecological balance. Growing up in India, I experienced the benefits of sustainable practices, such as growing food, buying from local vendors, living in homes with ample greenery, eating on banana leaves, etc. These experiences taught me that a sustainable lifestyle leads to a happier, healthier, and more socially connected community. As I studied Architecture I realized the broader implications of these practices. Our built environment impacts our mental and physical health, and unsustainable practices can create hostile conditions. I aim to promote practices that protect our planet while fostering healthier communities.

Obtaining the SFP certification will equip me with practical tools and knowledge essential for my role as an architectural assessor. I plan to use these skills to make more informed, data-driven decisions to inform strategic decisions in my assessments. By integrating sustainable practices into property evaluations, I will provide added value to clients and enhance our company’s reputation. Furthermore, the SFP credential will enable me to ignite meaningful conversations about facilities management. The certification will solidify my background in facilities management (FM) and empower me to advocate for its importance in the built environment. With the SFP certification, I will be able to make conscious choices in my everyday life as well adding one more committed individual to care for the planet. After all, the heed to sustainability must first begin at individual homes.

By earning the SFP, I will be able to identify and implement sustainable alternatives and solutions within our organization and projects. This certification will enhance our procurement process, providing a competitive edge during the bidding stages. Having a team member with the SFP credential will demonstrate our commitment to sustainability, and make our bids more attractive to the clients. Internally, the SFP will enable our team to better prepare for the sustainable measures required for each project before engaging third-party vendors and consultants. This proactive approach will lead to more efficient project execution and cost savings. Furthermore, my sustainability training will facilitate knowledge sharing and training within the organization, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

I am experienced facility manager with over 3 years of experience overseeing different facilities. Skilled in developing and implementing maintenance plans that have reduced operating costs by 15% and increased efficiency by 20%. Proven ability to lead and motivate over 30 team members, resulting in a 30% increase in productivity. Strong communicator with positive relationships with numerous stakeholders, including vendors, contractors, and clients. As a facility officer, my sustainability efforts in energy management have focused on comprehensive energy audits, upgrading to energy-efficient systems like LED lighting and optimized HVAC. Before taking over management of any building, my organization ensures that we conduct energy audit to ascertain the consumption rate of the property and proffer solutions for energy cost reduction. I have overseen the installation of solar panels and engaged in renewable energy contracts to reduce grid dependency. Initiatives include real-time energy monitoring, data analysis, and team engagement programs to foster energy conservation. These measures have led to significant energy and cost savings and reduced the facility’s carbon footprint. In addition to energy management, I encourage waste segregation in the organization by providing tagged waste bins for trashing plastics and nylon bags for recycling. My efforts have not only enhanced operational efficiency but also promoted a culture of sustainability within the organization.

First on my list will be efficient energy management. With the high cost of energy in recent times, organizations and individuals are increasingly burdened by the need to cut energy costs. The skills I acquire through the SFP certification will enhance my competency in efficient energy management and optimization of building systems. I will utilize these skills to develop and implement effective solutions to energy management challenges, ensuring significant cost savings and reduced environmental impact. Additionally, I will focus on sustainable procurement by prioritizing eco-friendly products, such as green cleaning supplies, to minimize our environmental footprint. Engaging stakeholders and advocating for waste recycling and circular economy projects will also be a priority. Forming a green team within the organization will be essential to fostering a culture of sustainability, promoting best practices, and driving continuous improvement in our sustainability efforts.

Earning the SFP will significantly enhance the organization’s sustainability efforts. I will implement energy-efficient practices to reduce costs, advocate for eco-friendly products, and optimize procurement. By managing waste recycling programs and forming a green team, I will foster a culture of sustainability. My training will ensure regulatory compliance, improve operational efficiency, and promote corporate social responsibility, enhancing the organization’s reputation. Additionally, I will develop climate resilience strategies and stay updated with sustainability trends to drive continuous improvement and innovation.

As a Facility Manager with over a decade of experience, I have prioritized sustainability in every aspect of my work. At my previous company, I spearheaded a comprehensive energy efficiency program that reduced energy consumption by 30% through the installation of LED lighting, smart HVAC systems, and solar panels. At my current company, my team and I also focused on water conservation by installing low-flow fixtures and utilizing rainwater harvesting systems, which cut water usage by 25%. I believe in continuous improvement, regularly conducting sustainability audits to identify further opportunities for reducing our environmental footprint. I am a person who is passionate about knowledge and learning. I am Egyptian work in Saudi My plan is to study hard, where I have been admitted, and eventually pursue a career as sustainability engineer. I know that being pre-study will be a real academic challenge, and this scholarship would help me focus on those tough classes, rather than worrying about how to pay for them.

As greenhouse gas concentrations rise, so does the global surface temperature, resulting in hotter temperature. More severe storms, increased drought A warming, rising ocean translate to a loss of species. Additionally, not enough food can result in increased health risks.

Poverty and displacement are also critical issues that must be addressed.

I am experienced in HVAC system and environmental regulations. Proven leader with a track record of pioneering award-winning projects in air quality and energy saving. I am actively involved in practical research and committed to community betterment and carbon-neutrality.

With 7+ years of experience, I have passionately designed, managed, and pioneered sustainability projects. A standout achievement is the BEAM Plus Platinum Certified Project, transforming a government facility into the first platinum-grade green interior project. Amid record-breaking heatwaves, I published an article in FMJ, urging for resilient cooling and sustainable air-conditioning in buildings. Recognizing the importance of innovation, I led R&D teams during the pandemic, focusing on developing anti-SARS-CoV-2 air filters and air-quality solutions for improved indoor air quality. In the long run, I believe that influencing others is more impactful. As an ESG mentor for NGOs and a leader at the Hong Kong Association of Energy Services Companies, I will educate emerging professionals and inspire the community on sustainable practices. Additionally, I will leverage my platform at IFMA and my membership at the International Sustainable Chamber to conduct workshops and publish papers, fostering global collaboration and sharing best practices. These initiatives will ensure that the skills gained from the SFP certification drive significant, measurable improvements in sustainability.

Earning the SFP certification will enhance my ability to impact both my school and organization significantly. In my role as a council member of my secondary school alumni association and Chairman of the Youth Member Committee at HAESCO, I will initiate sustainability programs and workshops, promoting environmental awareness and best practices. I am an Industrial engineer with extensive experience in managing sustainability projects within the coffee sector. I am deeply involved in coffee agriculture and logistics from the start of my career, I have built strong connections with coffee farmers and key government stakeholders. Passionate about environmental conservation, I have led initiatives that strengthen coffee-growing communities and enhance the coffee supply chain. Proactive and results-driven, I excel in developing technical proposals and managing strategic alliances. My dedication to sustainability and long-standing industry relationships highlights my commitment to impactful change.

Sustainability is important to me because it represents a commitment to the long-term health of our planet and communities. Growing up in a coffee-growing region, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by farmers due to environmental degradation. This motivated me to lead projects that reduce environmental impact and enhance community well-being. Currently, I am particularly interested in digital technology for green supply chains. Additionally, I plan to implement digital technology for green supply chains, utilizing IoT and data analytics to optimize resource use and ensure transparency. My goal is to reduce waste output by 25% within the next year. Moreover, I aim to integrate sustainable procurement practices to ensure that 50% of our suppliers adhere to eco-friendly standards within two years. These initiatives will contribute to environmental sustainability, improve operational efficiency, and position us as a leader in sustainable coffee production.

Earning the SFP certification will empower me to significantly impact Amar Café Global by implementing advanced sustainability practices. I plan to streamline our supply chain using digital technologies such as IoT and data analytics, leading to a 25% reduction in waste and optimizing resource use. This will enhance our operational efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint. Additionally, I will foster partnerships with eco-friendly suppliers, ensuring that 50% of our suppliers meet sustainable standards within two years. By promoting and implementing these practices, I will position Amar Café Global as a leader in sustainable coffee production, enhancing our brand reputation and contributing to a more sustainable future.

William Simon, 2024, Young Professional, USA

I have had the opportunity to fulfil a number of facility roles throughout my career at a variety of forward-thinking organizations. I have managed and improved a variety of facilities ranging from 20-year-old athletic facilities at Stanford University to the state-of-the-art LEED Platinum Certified office space for an international tech company. Currently, I have the privilege to serve as the Assistant Director of Campus Operations of an 8.5-acre community center. I have approved policies such as the conversion to LED light fixtures, lead vendor contract negotiations that match environmentally friendly policies and publication of conservation efforts. Through this program I will be able to lead by example at my current and future organizations with how to run a sustainable and functional facility.

Sustainability is important to me because I believe that to be an effective facilities director now and, in the future, it will require me to make decisions not only for the best interest of my facility and the people who use it, but simultaneously good for the environment as well. Understanding where our products come from, what they are used for, and where the waste ends up are all part of the sustainability cycle and are key decision factors for facility managers. We, as leaders in facility management, can change how people move through space and impact the environment through proper policy implementation. By doing this, we can create a new definition of sustainability for the future generations.

With my current facility approaching 15 years of age, new infrastructure being added over the past decade, and high turnover of staff, there has not been a single individual dedicated to understanding what the baseline of the facility should be. Since I have been in my current role, we approved the installation of a new building management system and joined forces with city officials to build a diverse team to find our new operating baselines, it is easy to copy and paste policies to follow an idea or trend, but it is much more difficult to see the whole picture and truly understand how each piece fits into the puzzle of sustainable facility management. 

By earning the SFP credential, I plan to reevaluate our organization’s sustainability objectives and show our leadership how it is not just possible, but probable to make a positive impact on our facility and our environment.

Tyrel Melville, 2024, Young Professional, Trinidad and Tobago, Sponsor: JLL

I believe that sustainability skills are essential for facility practitioners to impact our world and the future of our planet. As corporations adopt Net Zero Carbon goals, facility managers with sustainability expertise are key to implementing effective solutions. As an FM in the CRE community, I am dedicated to being part of the global solution.

With 22 years of facility management experience, including 11 years in senior management and leadership roles, my role at JLL demands proactive engagement in sustainability initiatives, identifying early opportunities that align with our clients’ Net Zero Carbon objectives. With the SFP, I will leverage my position to integrate sustainable solutions seamlessly into operations, educating occupiers on best practices. I also aim to make an impact with my responsibility for sourcing and supply chain management. With improved sustainability skills, I will enforce sustainability standards among vendors, ensuring alignment with corporate goals. As a senior FM, I am to serve as a trusted advisor to clients, guiding decisions that impact facility operations and contribute to financial savings, Corporate Social Responsibility, and risk management. Currently, as the Head of Facilities Management at PwC South Africa, I oversee sixteen (16) sites. My role encompasses a strong focus on sustainability, where I am responsible for collecting and analyzing data on the usage of water, electricity, gas, and diesel. This data collection is crucial for interfacing with our net-zero team to track and achieve our sustainability goals. In addition to data management, I lead initiatives to partner with landlords who have sustainability programs or own green buildings, which align with our environmental objectives. I also spearhead projects to install solar panels, aiming to optimize energy use and reduce our carbon footprint. My work in sustainability is integral to PwC’s commitment to environmental responsibility, ensuring that our facilities operate sustainably and support our broader corporate sustainability goals.

Currently I am a student and an energy engineer in NYC who helps building owners figure out ways to make their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems more energy and cost effective. From a young age I was interested in sustainable systems and competed in Future City competitions where my team got to design green roofs and stormwater management solutions to propose to city officials. Growing up, I majored in mechanical engineering with a focus on facilities management and I hope to become a Resident Manager within the next 3-5 years to manage and improves building facilities. I want to help buildings become more energy efficient and thereby reduce long term costs and carbon footprints. I believe I will be a responsible and curious facilities manager who takes care of both the tenants and the environment to the best of my abilities.

Sustainability is important to me because I want my children to live in a world where it is the norm to appreciate and protect our environment and the community that resides within it. One step at a time, I want to do my part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in my community and I see this being done through sustainable technology. This field fascinates me because it offers innovative solutions to pressing global warming issues. I believe that technologies like renewable energy, electric vehicles, and efficient waste management systems not only protect the environment but also promote economic growth and improve quality of life. I believe the skills and recognition from obtaining the SFP will help build my personal statement when applying to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the next two years. I also assist with installation and configuration of the system, making sure that all components are efficiently installed and working properly. The Kirch Center at De Anza, which is LEED Platinum, opened my eyes to the operation of sustainable buildings. While in school, I worked part-time at a zero-waste refill store where I learned the importance of sustainable products and cradle-to-cradle strategies. I was also able to inspire and educate customers on sustainability and why it is important. I am blessed to live in California, the state with some of the most ambitious climate change goals. CBRE and Meta are both sustainably driven to comply with the state initiatives to help combat GHG emissions. Sustainability is literally interwoven in my position at CBRE@Meta. I have already started to make a positive environmental impact at Meta after only 6 months in my role. I successfully proposed Meta stock their micro kitchens with reusable silverware to reduce the amount of single use products we use in 10 campuses across the Bay Area.

Sustainability in facility operations is gaining speed and I am in a unique position at CBRE@Meta to assist and influence the mission to connect sustainable facility operations with my personal concern for the environment. I believe the shortest path to a healthier planet is through sustainably designed and operated buildings.

I plan to use the skills I learn from the SFP credential to demonstrate to my peers and clients the value of IFMA’s SFP through measurable results and career enhancement. My next step in my career is to seek a sustainability role next year at CBRE@Meta within the sustainable operations division. Achieving the SFP will help me secure a sustainability role in the division. My goal is to bridge the gap between A&D and O&M so that green buildings stay green. I am currently in the process of obtaining my LEED O&M certification as well. The SFP would add a level of sophistication and FM focus to that certification. After pursuing my SFP, I will be pursuing the FMP certification to continue my education. I strive to become more involved in IFMA and eventually become an IFMA Silicon Valley committee sustainability chair in 3 years.

I am committed environmental activist constantly pursuing my passions for service, sustainability, and conflict resolution. My current position is a program specialist for Cascade Energy. In this position I have the opportunity to interact with various industrial facilities and learn about sustainable energy management. I also get to collaborate with great engineers and consultants to find new sustainable solutions for unique industry needs and future environmental policy decisions.

Environmental equity is the area of sustainability I find the greatest interest in. I see many ways to impact environmental justice including helping businesses be more sustainable. I believe it is crucial businesses and governments prioritize sustainability in order to ensure a liveable and equitable world for future generations. We know the world has a finite number of natural resources, yet our current production and consumption of these resources is irresponsible and unsustainable. For these reasons and more, sustainability is a fierce passion of mine.

My specific plans for using the skills obtained from the SFP certification include further developing my experience to consult on businesses’ unique sustainability needs and contribute to strategic problem solving of sustainability barriers. As I grow my career, I see the skills from this certification propelling me further into my passions helping businesses and disadvantaged communities benefit from sustainability initiatives. In my current role at Cascade, these sustainability skills have potential to move me into more customer facing work where I can work directly with Industries and community members. I look forward to applying these skills to support my organizations ambitious decarbonization goals. I am also a LEED Green Associate and see these skills helping me improve suggestions for greener buildings.

I will impact my current employer by providing solutions in think tanks and advancing my career in consulting. My current role is more focused on problem solving and assisting our internal teams. Participating in this program will help me contribute solutions to the unique challenges we encounter daily. The skills I gain from this certificate will also help me move toward more customer facing work. Being early in my career, I look forward to expanding my sustainability knowledge to better serve business and government customers. Ali Murat, 2024, Student, Turkey

I am a university professor teaching sustainability principles at undergraduate and graduate levels. I am a LEED AP (BD+C; O+M). I am interested in different aspects of sustainability, including design, construction, and operations for almost 20 years. I am the principal investigator of several research projects funded by international organizations such as the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ). In these projects, we have investigated the energy efficiency of public buildings in Turkey and developed a curriculum and summer school on energy efficiency with Turkish- German universities. We have recently finished another research project on developing sustainable implementation principles for an eco-industrial park, and this project was funded by the World Bank.

The built environment is responsible for several sustainability-related problems. For example, 40% of energy is consumed by the buildings. A very important part of embedded and operational carbon emissions is due to the buildings as well. Buildings also consume an important source of potable water in indoor and outdoor spaces. These facts prove that building professionals must radically change how they design, construct, and operate buildings. The “high-performance building concept” could respond to these sustainability-related problems. 

As a researcher, I am currently interested in integrating contemporary IT concepts with sustainability principles. Particularly, I have been exploring the integration of sensors and IoT devices to collect real-time data from the surrounding space. I am trying to interpret these data via contemporary methodologies such as artificial intelligence. For example, in a recent PhD dissertation that I supervised, we investigated the “energy performance gap” in facilities via machine learning concepts.

The Sustainability Facility Professional (SFP) program is a very comprehensive program covering different aspects of sustainability. Program and strategy development, financial issues, energy, water, material, waste, workplace management, implementation and human dimensions of sustainability. I am informed about the technical aspects of sustainability schemas, such as energy, water, and material management. However, the strategic, financial, and human dimensions of sustainability will be very new to me. I plan to transfer these skills to university students when teaching graduate-level sustainability-related courses. Moreover, as I am on the verge of creating a start-up company in water efficiency, these skills would help me successfully run this business.

I currently teach three graduate-level courses at the university: – BS 583 – Sustainability in Construction: Concepts and Technologies – BS720 – Energy Efficiency in Built Environment – BS722 – Life Cycle Assessment in Built Environment I would like to discuss sustainability principles in facilities in these courses. The FM practice is a developing field in Turkey. Therefore, I believe more and more students will get interested in FM practices and how sustainability could be involved in FM practices.

My prior experience in sustainability came from higher education courses in my MBA, learning about sustainability in the wine industry. My interest grew when I joined Jackson Family Wines as their sustainability efforts with vineyards and farming has taken off in the last few years. I currently assist the team in their efforts by giving them data for field maps and GIS systems, and bridging the gap in making our facilities more sustainable, to match their sustainable farming efforts. Although I do not work directly with the sustainability team, the joint efforts we work on together to make our buildings more sustainable is where most of my experience comes in to play.

Sustainability is important to me because it is daily acts and decisions made now, that make a difference in the long term. The area of sustainability in facilities, with how our buildings are run and functioning, is my greatest interest because in doing so, it allows corporations to make a bigger impact on the long-term effects on the planet. It is important to me that buildings are run efficiently because it impacts the quality of life that employees have now while working, and for future employees. Being part of one of the younger generations, it is very important to me to take care of the planet in any way I can for the future generations.

From the SFP certification, my specific plans to use the various skills will be implemented directly in the project management and operations and maintenance of our buildings. For every house repair, building maintenance, and new construction project, I would be able to bring a new perspective of how we can change our processes to be more sustainable. In the little changes of what supplies we use to make the repair, to what systems we install, I would hope to use the skills and knowledge to bring a new outlook to an industry that very commonly uses outdated practices. Many older contractors are comfortable using systems they always have, rather than the more sustainable option, and I hope to bridge that gap for facilities in the wine industry specifically.

I would impact my organization with the SFP by implementing the skills and practices learned in our building maintenance and management. The organization I am part of currently focuses its sustainability efforts toward farming and vineyards. While that is equally as important, I do not believe sustainability is limited to just that. I would hope to bridge the gap and bring sustainability into the construction and maintenance world of the company, and further increase our sustainability practices and goals with realistic, everyday changes.

Being responsible for the operation of six (6) offices and as part of the commitments acquired with the client, regarding the implementation of improvements and implementation of measures that favor the impact of the operation itself on the environment and as part of a personal awareness regarding the care of the environment, in a sustainable way, in the last 5 years the following projects have been successfully implemented: – Interconnection of the Transmilenio mass transportation system with the use of bicycles and secondly, Installation of sparkling water dispensers in the office with the purpose of reducing the generation of plastic and glass waste in the office.

Sustainability is important to me because it represents the way to execute processes in any industry in a responsible manner with the environment, reducing the negative impact on it and guaranteeing a sustainable environment, not only for the industry itself but for the people who inhabit it, being responsible day by day with its care and with the way to prolong the life of each element on the planet.

I intend to expand and update my knowledge of eco-sustainable practices, academic material and sources of information that allow me to innovate in the work I do and actively join forces to enhance sustainable operations. Nature has always been my greatest inspiration, and I have long believed it to be the most powerful force in the world. From an early age, I understood the importance of sustainability for future generations, and I have witnessed firsthand the environmental changes over time. This deepened my concern for preserving natural resources, as overconsumption and neglect of the environment lead to natural disasters and health crises. My passion for sustainability began in high school, where I actively participated in environmental campaigns, tree planting, and river cleanups, laying the foundation for my lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship.

With a background in civil engineering and construction, I have always sought ways to integrate sustainability into my professional life. My name is Carolina Paz Lagos Navarrete, I am 46 years old, I am Chilean, married, and I have 2 wonderful dogs. I studied in Santiago, the capital, I have a degree in Biological Sciences and obtained the title of Biologist with a specialty in Natural Resources and the Environment. I worked in forests in southern Chile, and then in research laboratories. Thanks to my laboratory management and administrative knowledge, I began working in facilities for multinational companies. I have currently been working in Real Estate for more than 10 years, 6 of which have been at JLL, for the Verizon account, and it has been a nice experience.

Due to my profession, and thanks to my current job as Community Lead, I am always looking for sustainable activities to develop in the office: from activities and meetings that actively involve coworkers, to projects that include the use of more environmentally friendly materials or equipment. In this way, our office is aligned with the standards sought by JLL and the account.

My hobbies are varied, I really like art in general, jewelry, painting, crafts. I also really enjoy reading and traveling. I really like meeting people, other cultures, and also enjoying the beauty of my country.

I am an Account Executive at Nuvolo, where I enable the Defense and Energy Public Sector to maximize their real estate, facilities, and sustainability potential through insights, data metrics, and technology. In addition to my civilian role, I serve as an Airborne PSYOP Captain in the Army Reserve, based in Austin, Texas. I currently hold a Master’s degree in Counseling & Psychology, as well as an MBA with a focus on Corporate Sustainability from Missouri University of Science & Technology. With my certification as a Sustainability Facility Professional and a scholarship recipient, I plan to leverage my role in technology to promote sustainable practices and enhance the environmental efficiency of the solutions, which I oversee.
